Creating Generative AI Policies

Local governments around the nation and in Oregon are beginning to develop and adopt organizational policies and guidelines on generative AI usage so that such tools are used responsibly, ethically, and legally by their staff. Based on the recent explosion of generative AI use, it is critical that local governments take steps to formulate such policies and guidelines, if they haven’t already.  Without AI governance policies in place, staff may nevertheless use generative AI tools without official approval, which poses significant risks to the organization.
